Looking Back - Two Years Ago Today

I can't believe I was holding an "Italian Bomb hero"-sized baby this time two years ago. After waiting in Labor & Delivery for over twelve hours while doing a crossword puzzle and looking on longingly (while on a strict no-food restriction) as Big D ate a delicious-smelling breakfast platter, then a couple slices of pizza, garlic knots, an iced coffee and a few snacks, I gave birth to our favorite dude and little commander - Baby D.

I'll tell you about the previous rookie-mom false alarms later.

For now, a picture of my swaddled Christmas present pre-Terrible Twos:

DIY Christmas Card - 2011

I hope none of my family members see this before they get one in the mail. Who am I kidding? None of them read this blog : |
For anyone who is interested in a tutorial, shoot me an e-mail! At some point, I may actually put together and post one after the holidays. I wouldn't hold my breath on this one, though.

Oral-B Stages Party

Recently, we had a FABULOUS Oral-B Stages party for the kiddos. Baby D is at the age where oral hygiene has become very important. The kid has a mouthful of bright white teeth. We want to make sure they stay that way!

A handful of fellow moms (and dads) got together on a cool but bright afternoon to learn about how to make tooth brushing fun for our toddlers. Oral-B and MommyParties sent over a package that are ideal for children 4-months through 4 years old  We received Disney's Winnie the Pooh Toothbrushes, as well as Cars, Toy Story and Princess toothpastes. In addition to the toothbrushes and toothpaste we also received popcorn/popcorn boxes, movie ticket invites, goodie bags, activity ideas, recipes, and money saving coupons.

Sleepy's Serenity Gel Pillow Review

Based on what studies have found about the importance of sleep on our health and well-being, I've put it at the top of my list for the coming year. I've actually been trying to focus on it since I was pregnant with Baby D. With the recent addition of my Dr. Breus bed, I've been achieving my sleep goals one snooze at a time.

Recently, Sleepy's sent over a set of pillows that I chose from their line. Big D and I added these babies to our already nearly perfect bed setup.

The Serenity Gel Pillow comes in a two pack and is a gel infusion poly fill with a quilted cotton cover. It feels as comfortable and cool as down minus the allergic reaction that I get from down. Its also hypoallergenic. The Sateen exterior is smooth and silky and nice enough that you wouldn't need to add a pillow case. The light blue satin piping gives it the appearance of serious sleep-inducing equipment. And it truly is.

Going Vegetarian?

Baaaah

They used to call me "Karnivore" in college because I was obsessed with the Atkins diet and would frequently pull a Slim Jim out of my bright purple LL Bean back pack during class as a little snack. This is why it comes as a complete surprise to me that I recently thought of becoming a vegetarian - on humanitarian humanness grounds. Mostly, I've been wondering if Baby D makes the connection between the chickens we see on the farm and in the books and the nuggets I served him for dinner. How do you explain that to a child without leaving them thinking of adults as animalcidal maniacs?

I was on the farm with Big D and Little D when I started to feel sad that I eat animals. They are so furry and cute and I regularly eat them with a side of vegetables. I can't even argue that they'd eat me if I didn't eat them because most of the animals we saw - cows, lambs, goats, etc are herbivores themselves.

I may need to rethink this who meat thing. I wonder if they have Slim Jims for vegetarians?

Thanksgiving Recap

*Disclaimer - If you are in any way adverse to over-the-top gluttony, do not read this post.

We held our first every Thanksgiving as a family in our home. Before she passed, Big D's Mom was the Thanksgiving Heroine and the family looked to her for an awesome holiday. We tried to continue in that same spirit and I hope we did her justice.

Movies on Demand Giveaway!

Well, kids, it looks like the late Spring temperatures that we've been enjoying in the city are about to come to an end. The same Mother Nature who knocked us around in that late October snow storm is returning for another round. Bring on the inside activities! Bring on the movies!

The latest hit movie titles are available Movies On Demand on cable the same day as DVD and 28 days before most other rental options! That make it super easy for this mama to rent movies. You know, without having to prevent the Squirmer from grabbing every brightly colored box or can in the store while my the contents of my purse ends up on the floor.

Tonight, we'll be treating ourselves to today's brand new releases:
  • Larry Crowne
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Playtex Twist ‘n Click™ Review and Giveaway!

I've got a mini Hansel who wanders around the house, leaving a trail of cereal or blueberries behind him. All day. Every day. Playtex has the perfect gift this holiday season for all busy parents who need a break from constantly cleaning up messes!

Baby D really likes to propel the tops of his other snack containers out of the stroller but the lids on the Flip Top Snacker attach directly to the handle, making it a little more difficult for him to send me on an 30 minute-long game of "find my snack cup lid" after our walks.

Old Navy Active Wear - A Little Help from My Friends

OMG. Mom needs to lose about ten pounds before Thanksgiving. So I can gain it all back in pumpkin pie. Their active wear choices were sleek, flattering, breathable and pretty sporty.

Motor-diapers and Other Modes of Transport

While taking our daily commuting trek in the mornings or traveling to New England on the weekends, I look forward to hearing an enthusiastic "MOTORDIAPER!" come from the cushy green club chair-like toddler carseat anchored to the backseat of the car. Baby D yells it every time a Harley, or a Yamaha or any other motorized bike rides by.

We've got many wonderful Baby D-isms that are just too cute for me to correct. I haven't read what Dr. Spock has to say about all of this, but its like Baby D has attended adorable training and also now adds "y" to most of the animal names he previously spoke in the boring adult way. Horsey, ducky, doggy, sheepy. I squeeze him so much he burps.

Next time you're at the zoo, visit its most long-necked denizen - the Butterfaffe. Or view the world's largest land mammal - the Elem standing by the cool pool of Whoady. But make sure not to get pulled over by a Peace-Car, hit a Trukt or drive onto a farm and hit a Faktor (Big D is relieved Baby D's Trukts aren't given the same letter treatment).

And please, whatever you do, don't forget the Botty. He needs it to relax in his overstuffed chair.

Sleepy's Mattress/Bedding Contest!

It's almost obli-cation time!

1.       Obli-cation*
A required or expected visit to family/in-laws during your vacation time. Not exactly what would qualify as a holiday, but would be a combined obligation/vacation.
*Definition from UrbanDictionary.com

Obli-cations can be stressful and sleeping conditions ranging from the barely tolerable to the unbearably terrible can compound the situation.

Just in time for the busy holiday travel season, Sleepy’s has a plan to help “insure” you against the angst of an awful night’s sleep away. Sleepy’s is looking for terrible tales of family sleepovers gone awry. Slumber sufferers can visit
Sleepy’s Facebook or blog and post their stories for a chance to win a new mattress and bedding.

Disclosure: This contest is sponsored by Sleepy's. I have not been compensated for this post. Good luck - I hope you win one of their sweet mattresses!

Halloween: Cute & Cuddly or Pop - Culty?

So, I had the perfect little costume for Baby D and was quite proud of myself because it involved clothing that he could wear any other day of the year. I hate spending money on things you can only wear once. Which is why I wore a pant suit to my wedding.

I kid.

But seriously, I had a little outfit that mirrors the clothing of a certain MTV reality star. I know. I'm a 16 year old girl. When I revealed my plans to Big D, he asked when I'm going to pick up a "real" costume.

Does Baby D really have to be a fuzzy duckling, lion, wallaby, suckling pig or any similarly cute and mundane animal?

Can't he just be Flava Flav or Pauly D?

Sleepy's Dr. Breus Bed MattressReview

With everything that's been going on, I forgot to tell you how well we've been sleeping since we got our new Dr. Breus bed. I was first introduced to the bed when I attended Dr. Breus Back to School sleeping tips presentation. Since then, Sleepy's has delivered a bed from the Dr. Breus Platinum Signature Series and let me tell you, baby, we are sleeping pretty damn well. I've owned expensive pillowtops in the past and nothing compares to this. It's the Cadillac of beds. Hands down.

When the Sleepy's guys set it up, I knew I was in for a treat when I saw that the actual sides of the bed and box spring are covered in velour. You know, that super-comfy sweatsuit material that you want to wear to get cozy on stormy days. There was also something very regal about the large blue label embrodered in silver thread that said, Princess, you won't feel any peas under this mattress. Yes, I totally made a fairytale reference

The pillow-top on the mattress was soft enough for me and firm enough for Big D. It also held our body tempurature just right - not bathing us in sweat like some others do. It is extremely conducive to a comfortable sleep and I've found myself dozing off after reading just one page of an otherwise interesting suspense novel.

While the price point is up there, you can easily find these beds on sale at Sleepy's for half off - bringing them well into standard pillow-top territory. The night's sleep you get fully justifies the price - especially when you think about the amount of time you spend (or are supposed to) spend in bed.

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. All opinions are always 100% honest and my own.

Dad! Mom's a Black Lady!

A couple of weeks ago, Baby D picked out a photo of two children in Time Out New York (its how he plans his weekends). Pointing to the young black girl sitting next to her young white male counterpart in the picture, Baby D exclaimed, "Mommy!". He has gone on to do this with other photos in books and magazines, always picking out the brown-skinned young woman or girl in the background (never women appearing my age - the kid knows how to flatter a gal!).

Paper Coterie Review & Giveaway!

I love turning my photos into gifts to share our moments with our friends and family (isn't that the point of taking all those pictures anyway?) I recently had the pleasure of ordering some custom-designed photo gifts from Paper Coterie. I usually don't like the graphic design of baby/family albums found at photo gift sites but these were beautifully designed and just my style. They have traditional styles as well as very design-forward templates. The quality far exceeded the cost.

And I finally got to publish those newborn photos I had taken of Baby D almost two years ago!
